Cooking equipment

When a pot or pan overheats and splatters grease out can potentially causes a fire, especially in a kitchen environment where there are many items that can help a fire spread. Therefore, stay in the kitchen and watch over when you are cooking, especially if you are frying. Also, keep combustibles and flammables such as kitchen paper or oil  away from the stove or oven can also minimize them from catching a fire.

Heating equipment

Winter times can be more prone to fires from happening as people turn on their heating equipment to keep warm. Make sure these appliances are maintained and if a fireplace is in use, chimney are cleaned and inspected regularly. Also, keep these heating equipment including portable heaters away from anything the can burn, which includes curtains, sheets, and furniture.

Candles

When candles need to be used, they should be placed in a sturdy holder on a leveled surface and keep them out of reach from children or pets and do not leave candles unattended.

Smoking

Careless smoking can easily causes fire from the burning cigarettes. Do not smoke in the bedroom or in the house if possible and beware of smokers that looks like they are nodding off. Make sure cigarettes are put out properly and ashtrays are away from anything that can easily burn.

Electrical equipment and wiring

All electrical equipment should be maintained and make sure there are no fray wires and when using the equipment, make sure you are not overloading an outlet or overusing extension cords or adapters. When fuses or circuit breakers trips frequently, or lights dim or flickers when equipment are in use, there maybe faulty wiring or equipment so make sure they are checked out immediately to prevent overheating or short circuits causing a fire. This also applies when using Christmas or any kind of lighting decorations.

Children playing with fire

Children can causes fire by playing with matches or lighters or even magnifying glass (out of curiosity or mischief). Make sure matches and lighters are kept out of reach and when doing “experiments”, they are supervised.
